Indoor & Outdoor Carpets

Indoor carpets and outdoor carpets are actually made of very different materials, mostly due to their different purposes.. Indoor carpets are designed for comfort, style, and to withstand typical indoor usage like constant foot traffic, pets, and other common indoor usages. Outdoor carpets must be able to hold up to the wear and tear that only nature can provide: Sun , rain and extreme temperature changes.
Outdoor carpets tend to be easier to maintain than indoor carpets, mostly due to the fact that outdoor carpets are usually made from synthetic materials.

Outdoor Carpets

Most people don’t think of carpeting as an outdoor flooring material, but yes, outdoor carpeting exists. More and more commercial entities are utilizing outdoor carpeting to improve their curb appeal, their design, and the comfort for their customers or guests. Even though it is still carpeting, there are some major differences between indoor and outdoor carpeting.

The Material Used

The material used in outdoor carpets is significantly different than what is used in indoor carpets. Synthetic materials are used in the manufacturing of outdoor carpets, such as plastic, rubber, acrylic, and polypropylene. Why are synthetic materials used? These materials are used in the production of outdoor carpet in order to protect against harmful UV rays that can cause an outdoor carpet to fade quicker than indoor carpet.

Increased Durability

You will notice an increase in durability when you purchase and install an outdoor carpet for your business. The reason for this is that since an outdoor carpet is made of synthetic material, it will be stronger than an indoor carpet. It will be able to sustain more wear and tear, more foot traffic, and the elements that Mother Nature throws at it.

Synthetic Fibers

Synthetic materials are those not found in nature. They are machine-made from various chemical compounds. Synthetic fibers represent the vast majority of carpet fibers sold today.

There are four major types of synthetic fiber used in carpeting: nylon, polyester, polypropylene (olefin), and the newest synthetic carpet fiber, triexta.

Natural fibers

Natural fibers are comprised of materials that grow in nature that are harvested and processed into fibers. While natural fibers make up a relatively small percentage of broadloom in today’s market, they still have a place in the carpet industry.

There are many natural materials but only several that are commonly used in carpet. Wool is by far the most common natural fiber in carpeting and is virtually the only natural fiber used in broadloom (wall-to-wall carpet). Other natural fibers are more often made into area rugs, including sisal, cotton, seagrass, jute, silk, and coir. Most of these fibers are either too weak or too rough to be made into broadloom.

Carpet Finishings

There are three common methods of rug finishes: binding, serging and fringing.
The process of binding consist of sewing a piece of binding tape to the edges of the carpet. Serging uses stitches to bind the edges. Fringing consists of attaching a fringe to both sides of the rug. This is mostly used for oriental rugs. The main purpose of rug binding or serving is longevity. An unbound carpet or rug will unravel overtime and quickly lose its beauty, shape, texture and durability as the loose fibers fall apart. Rug binding and servings, however, prevent fraying and ensure the carpet stays in top condition as long as possible. On top of their practical purposes, they can also contribute to a room’s aesthetic as much as fringing can. A binding or serving keeps the rug looking clean and sharp, which makes the room appear neat and organised. In contrast, an unbound rug with fraying edges will give a messy impression.

Binding

Binding involves wrapping a strip of fabric around the edge of the carpet and stitching it in place. This creates a polished look and prevents unraveling along with wear signs. Usually the binding fabric is made from polyester or cotton (sometimes sisal). The most common and affordable carpet binding is polyester.

Serging

Carpet serging is a sewing technique where the edges of a carpet are wrapped with thread in order to prevent unraveling and give it a beautiful, finished look. Serging uses a continuous wrap of yarn, about 3/8ths of an inch wide, around the edge of a rug.

Fringing

On hand woven rugs, the fringe tassels are the WARPS of the rug. These are the strands that wool (or silk) pile knots are twisted and tied around to create that rug.
This means each single tassel strand (usually cotton) runs from one end all the way through the middle of the rug to the opposite side. It is the skeleton of that rug.
