The five secrets to designing a luxury bedroom

If you’re dreaming of a luxury bedroom sanctuary, see how many of these five-star additions you can tick off the list!

Over the space of your lifetime you will spend an average of 227,468 hours asleep between your bed sheets – that’s 26 years! Your bedroom alone is the one place in your entire home where you’ll spend the most time, so let’s make that bedroom a spectacular place. A bedroom should be your own personal sanctuary, somewhere you can vent to the hubby, kick off your shoes and even get a bit romantic in.

It’s so much more than four walls with a bed in the middle – well, it can be, especially if you incorporate these additions you never knew you needed.

When you’re in the planning stage of designing your new bedroom, it’s really important to think about all aspects of the space. Now is the time to nut out in detail all of those special inclusions you’ve seen in five-star hotels that you’ve always dreamt about having. This is your chance to design it exactly how you want; that includes in the layout of the space, the finishes you choose and how you accessorise it. Have an overall vision in mind so that you don’t get sidetracked along the way.

1- Plan a scheme that embraces natural light

Without it we’d shrivel up and die. Natural light has the amazing ability to make you feel good on the inside and out. If you’ve got the chance to build a new window or increase an existing window, then make it as big as you can get. There are plenty of styles on the market but regardless of what you select, make sure it can be opened. Nothing beats the combination of natural light and fresh air.Don’t be limited to off-the-shelf sizes; custom-made windows will give you the ability for the window to work around what you want, not the other way around. You have the flexibility to select the style, the frame material, the type of glass and, most importantly, the size. As well have you considered a skylight? It’s virtually a window for your roof. There will be no risk of people peeping in and you’ll have a stunning overhead view of the clouds and stars.

2- Opt for high quality bed linen

If you want to feel like you’re floating on a cloud when gazing out at the city lights, don’t be stingy . While you’re there, invest on some top quality bed linen. There are so many beautiful designs now so you’ve got more choice than just floral, floral, white and more floral to choose from.

Picture your bed linen as an extension of your clothing. Something that will make a statement and, more importantly, that we’ll make you smile as you walk into your bedroom. It doesn’t need to stop at pillowcases, a sheet set and a throw cover either. Oh no, let’s layer it up!  The cushions should be of different textures and colours to act as the accessories of your bed. Yes, they are completely impractical and they’ll end up on the floor as you sleep, but they’ll look gorgeous when set in their positions, standing proud, in the morning once you’ve made your bed again. Keep the layers going and add some throws – again, texture is key and this is where you can really add a sense of luxury.

3- Go for statement pendant lighting

And the final touch to a spectacular bedroom is not only practical but its aesthetics add another designer touch. Pendant lights in any form help balance a space – they automatically fill the void between the floor and ceiling. There’s no set rule on where they need to be hung. You’ll see in contemporary design that it’s quite common to have a pair set above each bedside table or an oversized pendant directly over the bed. You can opt for a light fitting that picks up on other elements in your room such as fabric, copper or timber. But, if you want to go out with a bang, select a fitting that screams for attention. It won’t matter what decorating style your room portrays, as you’ll be able to find a light that complements it. From a practical perspective, before you secure the pendants in place, do make sure they are at a comfortable height. If you’re hanging them over your bedside tables, have a play around with the height and make sure the light projection will reach you when you’re reading a book in bed. If the pendant is hanging over the bed, it’s advisable to check that the height is not too low so that you don’t run the risk of smacking your head or getting the sheets caught up in it when you’re making the bed.

5. Set up a lounging area

If you’ve got the space then utilise it to its potential. Having a lounge space within the confines of your bedroom adds that little tick of luxury. It all of a sudden transforms your space from a place where you sleep into a place where you can sit down and relax, read a book, have a glass of wine or simply sit down and put your heels on.The layout of your lounge space can vary depending on the configuration of your open floor area. Include a luxurious and super comfortable armchair situated in the corner of the room by a window. Dress the chair with a soft pillow and throw, and place a floor lamp nearby so you can nestle up and read a good book in the late of the evening.

6. Create a stunning ceiling to look up to

The ceiling of a space can often be the most forgotten about aspect of any room, yet it’s such a large component. By creating a stunning ceiling, you’re completing your bedroom design full circle. There are now no elements left out of the package. You’ll be surprised just how often you’ll look at it if there’s something beautiful to gaze at. From timber planks, plywood panels, concrete panels and wallpaper, you can just about have any material you want up there. However, you can also make an elegant statement without having to install any cladding at all. By simply using form and shape as your feature, you can design the ceiling into something quite spectacular. Add in some recessed LED strip lights to uplight the ceiling and a feature pendant to hang over the bed, and all of a sudden you’re eye will be drawn straight to it.
